Bathroom Update: The Good, Bad, and Yucky

Do you have one of those projects that has been a project for years? Please say you do so I don't feel as bad about all of the projects we have going on around here! Our most recent project is our bathroom. When we first moved into our home, our bathroom was pink and black. Yep, it looked like a bubble gum bomb when off. I couldn't take it so we gutted it. And when we gutted it and fixed it up just enough for us to use, it stayed like that for 3 years... ugh. Lately, I have been all gung-ho for weekend projects. So, when I had a long Presidents' Day weekend, I knew I wanted to work on that we did...and we did the next weekend as well...and here we are still working.  I wish I had the final reveal to share with you today, but we are not quite ready yet and here is how everything went down so far...

1. The Discovery

We live in a Cape Cod styled home and our bathroom has a dormer window in the shower. I like to describe it as awkward and cool all at the same time. Anyway, we obviously needed to do something to cover the window when we were showering, so we put up a room darkening curtain. We always kept the curtain closed and we never really thought much about it because it was in our shower. So, when I was ready to paint our bathroom walls, I decided to take down the curtain to let some light in the bathroom {that is our ONLY window in the bathroom :( } and what did I find????  Cue the DUN DUN DUN music now...MOLD. Yep, black mold all around the tile, window, curtain, trim, etc. It was a great way to start off our weekend bathroom project. NOT! So, we suited up in our protective gear and used bleach to get rid of the mold. I have to say, getting rid of the mold wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. However, it was still scary to find. I kept saying that I could have been mad that we found mold in our home or thankful that we found it before it got any worse. I went with the second option.

2. The Multiple Trips to Lowe's

I think it goes without saying that whenever you are working on a project you will be at Lowe's at least twice a day until it's finished. Ok, I may be exaggerating, but I seriously feel like I'm there all of the time! We planned to paint our vanity and walls and I really wanted to find the perfect color. I am very indecisive when it comes to paint color. I usually pick a color that I think I like, get the gallon, start painting, annndddd hate it. I didn't want that to happen again, so I took advantage of the cheap paint samples. I think I paid a little over $3.00 per sample. Honestly, they give you quite a bit for a little sample. I was very surprised. Whatever I don't use I can use for small projects around the house. When I finally found the colors I liked, I ran back out to Lowe's to purchase the paint. Because our bathroom is a smaller space, I got away with getting a quart of wall paint. Guys, I'm going to be honest...I painted my entire vanity with the sample paint. I don't know how the paint is going to hold up because it's sample paint, and because it is not "furniture paint". Be on the lookout for an update on that! I'll let you know how it's holding up! ;)

3. Nothing is Straight

Bless my dear husband. There is nothing in our home that is straight. Literally nothing. So, adding trim to our bathroom has been quite the task. Our bathroom also has a lot of weird angles, so he needed to work to get the trim to fit into those spaces. He's been a trooper though and I know he's anxious to pass the decorating torch off to me!

The Good...

As far as the good news of this little bathroom reno...well, I wish I had more of that than I do. I guess the good news is that I can see the light. And I mean that literally, too. I had my eye on this beautiful light for months! I was at Lowe's the other day, found my dream light on clearance, AND it was the last one left! I mean come on! That was totally meant to be and I think the big man upstairs knew I needed a little reassurance about this entire project!

(sorry for the terrible cell phone photos)

For all of you following along on this little journey, I shared with you last week that our washer bit the dust. And to prove that my house is in no way perfect, I give you this...

The work space and the MASSIVE laundry pile. Just keepin' it real! Don't worry, our new washer is coming this week and hopefully this little room and the rest of the upstairs will be back to normal after this weekend! See that cute light there in the corner? ;)

Thank you my sweet readers for following along on this little journey today. It has been quite crazy living in renovation. But I'm excited to share the big reveal with you on here, so stay tuned!
